Sometimes we all need a little inspiration when we’re looking to try something new. Crafts can be fun, while also being relaxing and a welcome distraction from the everyday dull routine. Recently I have been trying out a few new crafts. These are my top 5 picks for you to try in 2022.
1-Resin
With so many different types and makes of resin it’s understandable that a lot of people find resin crafts intimidating. I first tried resin a few years ago encountering many issues and made many mistakes, making my first experience far from enjoyable and put me off the idea of using resin altogether. Two years later I decided it was time to try again, this time falling in love with the craft. It is important to do your research, to figure out what resin is best for you and the crafts you plan on using it for. You might want to start small and work with UV resin. This is great for beginners as it requires no mixing or measuring and cures quickly under a UV lamp but can also be cured on a bright windowsill.
Once you have gained some experience, you may be ready to move on to Epoxy resin. I recommend starting with an equal measure 2-part epoxy, making it easier to maintain a correct mix ratio. A small set of scales are a great buy to insure equal quantity’s. Although you need to
be cautious with resin, as long as you have all the correct protective equipment and read instruction carefully, the possibility’s to what you can make are endless. Everything you need to begin your resin craft, including a wide variety of silicone moulds can be purchased easily online.
(add glitter to your resin for extra sparkle and shine)
2-Miniature canvas painting

Not everyone has time to spend hours painting a huge masterpiece, so why not start small. The beauty of painting on a small canvas is that they are cheaper and don’t require a lot of paint to cover them, giving you the freedom to experiment with new techniques and styles. It’s a lot less scary if you mess up and decide to start again. You can do something simple or you can create a miniature intricate masterpiece, it’s entirely up to you. Either way you end up with a cute decorative piece of art to display proudly in your home. I love using these little canvases with wooded easels to display my finished work.
3-Punch needle embroidery

Punch needle embroidery is becoming extremely popular and after giving it a go for the first time, I can see why. I wonder how many other people, have random half used balls of wool taking up space in a cupboard or on a shelf somewhere. I know I did, and wasn’t sure what I would use it for. That’s why I decided to try punch needle embroidery. You can pick a design or make something abstract and with various options of needle size and length, you can vary your design to look how you want. I also love the option of choosing which side you like the best, with one side making a stitch pattern and the other creating fluffy little loops giving your embroidery a unique texture. I was surprised by how much fun it was as I’m not usually a fan of sewing but found punch needling so enjoyable I was ready to start my second project as soon as I had finished my first.
4-Polymer clay

I have been using polymer clay for years now and over time created many things from detailed sculptures to jewellery and keyrings. Polymer clay is by far the most versatile craft material I have ever used and something I think everyone should try. There are so many colours and effect options from metallic to glow in the dark, giving you the freedom to be your most creative self. It’s fun, relaxing and what’s really great is that you have all the time you need and you can redo your creation until your happy, as the clay wont set hard until you bake it. As a craft that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, it’s a great option for something new to try.
5-Bracelet making

My fifth pick is bracelet making. Although making jewellery in general can be a fun and rewarding craft, there are a lot of jewellery options with different fastenings, making it hard to know where to start and what bits to buy first. I found that simple stretch bead bracelets are a great jumping off point as you are able to start creating with just some elastic and some beads. With such a variety of beads available, there’s no limit to the creative possibility’s. It’s easy to do and can be enjoyed by all ages, making it a nice rainy day activity to keep the kids entertained. What’s more is that once you have created your bracelets you get new unique accessories you can wear, tailored to any outfit or occasion.
